This box is much bigger than it appears. I should have put something in for scale but forgot. Anyway. This box is made out of Lyptus which is an engineered tree that grows fast from its own stump. Meaning the foresters don’t have to re-plant after cutting and they get to harvest in about 17-20 years as opposed to 50-70.
I thought I would go ahead and give the wood a try and ended up making a bunch of stuff out of one big board. This box was one of them.
It is 6” tall, 14” wide, and 6” deep. I laminated the block and cut out the one BIG drawer. While the Lyptus itself is a lighter weight wood, the box was still pretty hefty. I had made a cutting error on one of the sides of the outer shell. I decided to curve into the side walls on both sides. It got rid of the boo boo, lightened the weight a bit, and added a curve where I usually don’t put curves. Triple win!
The drawer is flocked with black fibers and the finish is thinned poly and lots of time with 0000 steel wool. The pull is brushed pewter. I didn’t think I would ever have a box big enough to use this particular pull. But it fits on this big box well.

Great Looking Project.
Thanks for the info on Lyptus. I had no idea it grew so fast and didn’t need replanting.

Great bread box. I think this is the first band saw bread box i’ve seen.
Lyptus is nice to work with. Great grain, Great color. Beautifull job on the finnish too.
One more case of a bobo becomeing a nice design addition.
Keep thinking outside the box and creating more stunning peices.

I like Lyptus .
Does it keep your bread fresh and what purpose does the flocking serve ?Is it hard to get the crumbs out of the flocking ? Is the Poly a food safe finish ?
Sorry for all of the questions , but I am new to this .
