Ben and I made this fish trivet from red oak. Yesterday we cut all the parts and glued up the assembly. After the glue was hard, we sanded it. This morning we cut out the outline, drilled the eye-hole, and did final sanding. We applied mineral oil as a protective finish. Ben will give this to his mom and dad at a family cookout tonight.
Ben learned about hand and power sanding, drilling, glue spreading, clamping, cutting identical-length parts, power nailing (observing only), jigsawing (observing only) and simple use of a combination square. H also learned how to apply a mineral oil finish.
This project is from Popular Woodworking’s excellent book “I Can Do That”.
