It is pretty cool. I know someone who would really like this.

Not being an owner or use or a lathe, I have a pretty novice question. Isn’t it hard to turn or even dangerous if the log wants to turn eccentric as you mention in the project link?

Thanks folks for the kind comments.
I’m always experimenting with various aspects of wood and post things like this to , hopefully , get you out in your shops honing the craft.

Jeff, eccentric turning has been around for some time and accounts for many of the dramatic shapes you often see turned.
It has it’s dangers but carefull mounting of the wood will lessen the chance of an accident dramatically.
The other big factor for this type of turning is selection of the proper tools for the job.
I would not tackle this job with a beginners set of lathe tools for instance.

Cheers
Bob

Very nice Bob. I love making bird houses but have never made on on a lathe. Mine are normally made from recycled fence board. I enjoyed the photos. Thanks.

Bob! Now THAT is stepping outside of the box. Literally and figuratively. Nice! I wonder about taking a larger diameter chunk and turning a cone for the roof? Would that work? I thought if a recess was turned in end grain to fit the house, then chucked with expanding jaws and with the tailstock in place a cone roof turned. Would that work? Really a neat birdhouse!

Hi Mot:
“I wonder about taking a larger diameter chunk and turning a cone for the roof?”

That was my first thought but that dreaded hex roof was a reject from a previously failed project so I got that off the floor in the shop at the same time I found a use for the birch log.
I think the next one I do I will accomodate for a turned roof. I wonder about it splitting in our cod winters though.

Some of you must wonder if I am a bird nut?
I guess the answer is I’m getting worse. <g>
I do encourage them to feed and nest around my place because they do a great job in keeping the insect population down. – I don’t care to use pesticides if at all possible.

I encourage you all to try a few around your property.
