Project Information

I was making this box as a trophy for a dog show, before I cut the splines wrong, but decided to continue anways. the waterfall bubinga top is the small thickness I had left after resawing. The tab and splines are walnut. I used 14mm barrel hinges. this box is one of few pieces we have kept. the finish is a Minwax wipe on poly.

Doug, that is a gorgeous box. The wood has some beautiful grain to it and the walnut accents add visual interest to the box as well.

Nice job.

Absolutely beautiful! The contrast between the body and the top is very striking. The finish is wonderful and brings out both woods excellently. Could you share the finish process with us or is it a closely held family secret?

I think that the splines set up that way add character. someone once said that the mark of a craftsman was the ability to make a "mistake" into an element of the work. in this case if you had never mentioned that the splines were not teh way you had intended I would have never known. beautiful box.
