This pen is made from the 391BChallenge wood that was provided by John in Pen trade 3.
He gave us some spalted Willow and he said that it was quite flaky and hard to turn.
I found that it turned ok but the finish that I used didn’t work to well on the open pores of the willow wook.
Here is the 391Challenge Pen with the 391Bchallenge pen.

The 391Challenge entry. Cherry Burl
The 391XChallenge entry Desert Ironwood.

looks good. did you reapply a finish on it? did you have to seal the pores somehow? I need to finish mahogany box, and will probably run into a similar case…

The finish on the pen is a combination of Shellac and Carnauba wax. It is put on with a rag and friction applied until your fingers cannot stand the heat. It takes a couple of hours to harden up so the shine stays. It will dullen up a little if you try to assemble the pen.
I applied a couple of times. The friction causes the finish to be soft and it seems to fill the pores OK. You can see the finish be shiny and then go dull as you give it more pressure. It’s at that time that the finish will move around and fill the pores.

Karson, try using a plain old fashion brown grocery bag to buff up the finish while the pen is still on the lathe. The friction heat from the bag helps harden the finish quicker. Pens look great!

Jeff where do you find a grocery bag now. All I see is plastic.

Again, very nice Karson.
I just have to ask, do you write neatly, too?
