Project Information

Finally, the chair is done, and this completes the study desk unit now.

The chair is inspired by the Nakashima's "CONOID CHAIR", I liked the design, so I wanted to try this.
I used 2 rustic cherry logs for the legs, and that was the biggest point, made it so difficult, but at the same time, made this chair different from the original. (It's so different in many ways anyway, though)
And one more thing very special about this chair was the width, I have only 36cm (14inches) space to put this chair in the desk space.

The seat, the feet, and the top of the back are white ash, all the dowels are beech.

For the foot rest, (the one just like a box) sides are pine, the top is beech. He only need this for a few years, and after that he can use this as a box, too.

If I ever try this CONOID CHAIR once again, I will definitely use straight and thicker lumber for the legs. I needed to add the support legs because the log was too thin/slender, the joints went OK, but the legs it-selves bended when I sit there.

After all, this was a very challenging and very interesting project, and I really enjoyed it very much.
And the most importantly, my son is very happy that this unit is all done now.

kiwi1969,
Well, I wanted to try anyway, so there needed to be a challenge no matter how IU tried it. Thanks.

Wow, it turned out great, Junjisan.

You can say whatever you want about the log legs but it is them that give the chair its personality. Without them it would look like an 80's design but the combination of modern over rustic gives a lot of character to the project.

Of course, you could say that "no pain, no gain"...)

Skarp,
I wanted my son to use this desk for many years, that's the main thing I was thinking about when I was making them, and if he says someday, he doesn't need them, then I will be the one who use the unit, (kind of waiting for him to say so someday…)

Jojo,
Well, thank you for the kind words. The logs have its personality from the very beginning, yes, the more the character is strong, the harder to use it, but when you can use the character in the right place, it will be the strongest and the best. That's what the guy of the book, Nishioka said. I think it's right in a way.

The chair looks great, I really like it, time and aging will ad more character…..Its always much more interesting the personal interpretation of a known chair instead the trivial "copy" thing.

Moai,

Thank you! I really hope the chair gets old with everyday use, and get more character.

Nice work as usual Junji! It was nice to read about the build for this chair and seeing how everything didn't go as you wanted it to go, but making it work in the end.

Love how the complete set turned out.

That's a cool design. Well done. Don't know why, but I see a banjo picker when I look at that!? Just thought I'd share. :]

Really like your chair Junji just the way it is. It looks very comfortable for him to sit in. You might not be able to get it back from him later.

oldskoolmodder,
Every time I make something, I feel how thing doesn't go as I wanted it to go, but for this chair, that happened all the way. But as you know, that's one of the main reason I keep trying, and the most enjoyable part.

"Banjo Picker"? I don't know what you mean… You mean you can see "Banjo Player" when you look at the chair?

Chris,
Thank you. I made the desk first, and the chair later, but using the same wood made them a good combination.

I don't know, when I first saw this project, for some reason I saw a banjo picker playing on there. Just a flashback I suppose, shouldn't type that stuff out loud. :}
