Project Information

After a round of golf the crew hangs out on the deck for drinks and cigars every weekend. I grew tired of putting my cigar down on the table (and hearing about it) and I really dislike putting it in the ashtray. I saw a product on Amazon that I liked and decided to make something similar for the gang.

I have a bunch of Mahogany pieces that I got for cheap on CL a while back that was perfect for this project. Admittedly, these aren't machinist-precise, especially with the runout of the drill press and the inherent sloppiness of using a really long extension (I didn't have a short extension to make it through the blank), but I think they came out just fine. After boring the hole I ripped and jointed them and cleaned up any unevenness in the bore on the spindle sander.

After building the bases I realized it would be nice to get name tags made up. Luckily that worked out just fine, despite my lack of planning to accommodate them. I used Arm-R-Seal, fully knowing that it wouldn't hold up to the burns, and being OK with that. I've already got a few burns on mine and I like the character that it adds. I added black felt to the bottoms, which gives a great soft feel when setting them down and moving them around.

These look nice! It would be interesting to add something to the recipient's cigar holder whenever they make a hole in one. Maybe add a penny (1 cent), a marble or maybe just a 'notch' in the wood each time. It would remind them of each hole in one whenever they use or show the cigar holder.

Great looking cigar holders! They would make great looking accessories in a nice cigar lounge, while sipping a fine single malt!
