The design for this box for my new neice, Kelly, to help celbrate her wedding to my nephew, Adam, was inspired by a design in FWW by Doug Stowe. Doug’s design was beautifully carved, but I decided to emphasize the walnut which came from my father-in-law’s farm. I also realized that relief carving is just something I’m not ready to do. Someday.
The dovetail joinery is handcut. The top is cherry.

I like the design and anyone who had cut dovetails is ace in my book. That walnut is sublime.
Maybe another set of knobs on the top ‘drawer’ .. to fool the eye. IMHO

Great job…beautiful wood…and I’m in agreement…other knobs to fool the eye…but otherwise a great gift…a great gift.

Very nice. I’m sure you made lots of points with a new family member.
You made a good choice not to carve the walnut. Take it from a carver, walnut is HARD. Cherry would be better if you wanted to carve. Basswood is the easiest, but it does not have much grain and blotches with stain.

Tony – I like to think that the fact that the walnut is hard was why I shied away from attempting a carved design. What I really want to do is add marquetry to my boxes. I like to say that (1) when the garden is planted, or (2) during a cold snowy winter day, or (3) when it’s too hot to play golf, or …, then I’ll take out the knives an veneer kit and give it a try. Maybe I should begin to say “Whenever” rather than “Whatever”. Someday.
By the way, your lions are an inspiration!
