When I have nothing to do, I scratch my balls…

I had a freshly pruned grapefruit branch.
I turnen a couple of balls, soaked them in soapy warm water for th night, let them dry slowly (couple of months), and then turned the (by now Rugby) balls into perfect spheres. Free hand on this one, not with the jig I had built.
Turned out nice, but rather… dull. In terms of grain patern.
So I turned a concave piece, screw it ~5mm (~1/5”) off center on a wooden disk, put the ball, secured it with the tailstock (padded with some piece of wood), fired the lathe up, and started scratching…
Scratch, turn aside, scratch… you get the picture.
I then used some acrilic paint in the grooves, let dry and re-sanded on the (now centred) lathe.
No finish.
Voila!
Fun little project for the bored turner….
Cheers!

That’s a very cool design and process. You didn’t by chance take pictures of the jig you used. Always have to try something to new. Thanks for sharing.

When you have nothing to do, your brain works overtime and the result is very nice and unique.

Well, Scott, I probably have. Just need to find’em. I did take a short video not long ago, but it focuses on the ball rather then the jig. Know what? I’ll take pics and post them. Either here or as a new project.
Thanks!
And thank you Steve and Eli, too!
Cheers folks,
Yuval

You are a very clever guy. I love your work!!
I’d like to see the sphere jig you built, too.

Don’t know about clever (and no, academic degrees do not always mean clever), but I do like to experiment, try new things, vary al the time.
