I carve all of my wood spirit carvings using rotary hand tools. I use a hand piece that is similar to a Dremel tool. I use different bits to cut away at the wood in different ways. Some bits remove a lot of wood, while others are as tiny as needles. This allows me to get a whole lot of detail into each one of my wood carvings. I like to add just a tad of oil paint to my carvings to accentuate my cuts.

This wood sculpture is hand carved in a Red Pine Knot. Pine knots are the forest’s driftwood. They make for a unique, stable and beautiful carving medium. Any place that a branch meets the trunk of a Pine tree, a knot is formed. When the tree falls and rots back into the Earth, the pitch-filled knots remain in-tact as they are very resilient to rot. It is said that there are spirits that inhabit the knots that allow them to remain unscathed for so many years. It’s my job to release the spirits :)

Josh, looks this fella has a lot on his mind!!.
Great job mate.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

This is great. The fella’s eyes look as though he’s thinking When are you gonna remove that last little bit there, so I can get out of here?
