My First Wood Turning Project

I always wanted to try wood turning—so 9 months ago I bought an inexpensive lathe. (I soon found out that was the just the beginning—and the easiest part—of tooling up for wood turning!)

I figured I’d mess up my first attempt, so I put together layers of scrap woods in different patterns so I could make all the mistakes at once.

I used wood from a walnut tree branch I’d cut and dried, wood from an old pallet skid (turned out to be beautiful, but rough cut, warped and bent—took some work to clean up), and some cherry wood from some old flooring samples I salvaged from a dumpster.

My expectations weren’t that high, but to my surprise, it worked out!

Only problem is, now I’m hooked!

Yeaaah Buddy! You’ve gone and done it now. You’re on a very slippery slope, and there’s no getting off! CONGRATS on such a beautiful first piece!

Oh, and WELCOME to LJs !

I can see that you are progressing very well , welcome to the wacky world of woodturning, nothing is sacred here, and you will find everyone your friend, keep experimenting, and turning out those nice projects. Glad to have you as a buddy. By the way, I was a pilot too, I could pile it higher than anyone else.

Who? I ask, who, decides to “take up turning”, and starts with a segmented turning? You’re a nut, Brent. And, oh, by the bye, it’s lovely. Good work. So you know now that the machine was the cheapest part of the idea?
