So I woke up early this morning ( 4:30-ish ) couldn’t get back to sleep so rather than watch TV, I decided to wander out to the shop. The temperature in the shop was already 80* and I figure it’s a harbinger of the day to come, which had been verified last night when the TV weatherman said we’d see highs near 100 today.

I added a coat of lacquer to a couple bowls I’m trying to get finished and started digging thru my scrap pile to see what I could find to do in the meantime. I spotted a cutoff from a cutting board that I made a few years back and tried to look at it with new eyes. It was 2 strips of oak with a strip of walnut in the middle. Digging deeper into the pile I spotted a piece of curved oak that came from the bathroom cabinet I recently built.

Stacking, twisting, turning, and looking at the pieces from several angles, I somehow spotted THIS …. Took me less than an hour to cut, sand and glue together the pieces, and put on a coat of Tung oil. Not sure if I want to spray it with the lacquer or just leave it oiled.

That’s a beautiful piece of 14” wide maple I used as a backdrop and as I was focusing the camera I realized it kinda sorta looks like the sun and clouds behind it.

Thanks for looking.

That’s cool. It is amazing what we can do when we look at things “outside the box.” Great use of scraps.

Nice piece. We are alike as not many pieces of wood gets wasted in our trash. You may be frugal but I,m cheap.

Thanks for all the nice comments folks !

Vernon: My wife says I’m cheap too. She also says I’m “anal” but I like to think of it as “Pays attention to details” LOL

Sun rise on the prairie is what I see. Good imagination Joe. Make sure you stay up late enough to see the sunset.

Howdy Joe,

I remember sitting in the shadow of the cross on the hill when I was a child. Thanks for the memory and for sharing your faith. Beautifully done sir.

Kinda like what God does with us…takes the scraps of our lives and makes something beautiful. Nicely done, Joe. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks again all.
Dutchy, if you thought of “Calvary” first , then you will want to see the other piece I’m making. It’s also from a piece of scrap, but the basic shape was already in the broken board. I’ll be posting it in a day or two.
