This is another box made using the box joint jig. The box is made of banyan… about as soft as aspen, but looks more interesting. The lid and bottom are maple. The wood hinges and her initial on the lid are walnut. Everything is 1/4” thick. Finished with several coats of shellac.
I used shellac because I just finished the box yesterday and didn’t want it to smell strongly when I gave it to her. I used a spray shellac (Zinnser Bulls Eye, clear). It just didn’t want to level out. I don’t usually like projects to have a glossy finish, but the Mother’s Day projects finished w/shellac are glossy… I sprayed 3 coats, sanding with 320 in between. Maybe I should have used water-based polyU.
Anybody have advice for shellac on small projects…

I particularly like the stylised “R”,,very bold. Hinges are better than the brass ones I use.
Welcome and look forward to more posts.

The initial give it elegant touch – Very nice box..
Question about appling the initial.
Was glue squeeze out a problem? How did you handle it?

SgtSnafu, Thanks for the comment… I’m no master at glue-ons but this is what I do: I apply small dots of wood glue down the center, then carefully spread them down the central 50% with my pinky finger, leaving bare perhaps 25% of the width on either side… this leaves some ‘wiggle’ room for positioning as well as some surface to absorb what would be squeeze out. I clamp with a board over the letter to spread the pressure and after 15-20 minutes I use a knife blade remove any squeeze out. I know the letter is decorative and doesn’t require much to hold it in place, and there’s no harm if there are bare spots, so I try to not use an excess of glue. I’ve tried with dots of medium viscosity cyanoacrylate (and not spreading it w/finger!), but I didn’t care for it.
