Porch Swing

My wife saw a picture of a porch swing and said the usual, “Can you make that?” Width is 32” so a pillow set can be placed on the swing for added comfort. Made out of pine. Arm supports are doubled 3/4 pine. Back/bottom supports are made out of 2×4s half lapped at the joints. Made a jig for the slats to ensure all slat screw holes lined up. Forgot to take a picture of the swing after last sprayed coat of Belgian Waffle (pale yellow) paint. Yup, she wanted it painted. Once installed I will take another pic and post it. Also have installed a bungy cord to hold the swing from moving too much in the wind when not occupied as the lower eye bolt can reach a window. Did install a 6” board over the lower part of the window as a safety precaution. Swing will be down during hurricanes. Chain is from a big box kit that is all ready assembled for $24.

Nice job and it looks like it’s going to be very comfortable and relaxing.

Nice simple clean design. My wife is asking for four (4) of these suspended around a fire ring – I was hoping she might forget about it but it doesn’t seem likely. By chance do you have a sketch-up model of your bench you might be willing to share???

Nice looking job there Don and best of all you keep the Misses happy! I learned a cool little trick from an old timer with porch swings, find some heavy duty springs(truck hood) and suspend the swing from them at the ceiling hooks. It gives the swing a Cadillac like ride! Once again, nice work.

Greg48: No. I took most of the measurements from an older full sized swing in the back yard.
Rob: I’ve seen the springs you mentioned, but they totally slipped my mind. I’ll remember that next time I’m in a big box store, I’ll check them out. Thanks.

Nice build. I like the size and extra space.
