I gave my wife quite the surprise when I flipped the light switch while showing the her these cabinets for the first time.

This is the type of project that gets designed and built when you’re trying to decide between two different projects and the “wouldn’t it be cool if…” thought flashes in your head. I’ve always like Krenov style cabinets and was thinking through the design when I was reminded of the poor lighting and considered building a lamp with wood veneer accents first instead.

These are the cabinets I had been designing, except I replaced the solid wood doors with a hollow panel with veneered plexiglass on the front and a removable veneered ply panel on the back. In person it looks like a standard solid panel until the LED lights inside turn on. These guys add some nice ambient light to help out my relatively poorly lit living room. Pictures below show how these panels were constructed.

This is the type of project that gets designed and built when you’re trying to decide between two different projects and the “wouldn’t it be cool if…” thought flashes in your mind. I’ve always like Krenov style cabinets and was trying to decide between building a pair of them or build a lamp with wood veneer panels as accent.

I’m using one of these as a liquor cabinet, but haven’t figured out what to do with the other. In the spirit of playful interiors for these types of cabinets I decided to use up more of my scrap pile to make the reverse mini-me cabinet for that one, but I’m not sure if I want to keep it inside or move it nearby and add some removable (maybe glass?) shelves. I really like the book-matched back panel and it’s a bit of a shame to hide it. What do you all think? I guess I can always wait until I figure out what to store in it.

Cool idea. Reminds me of the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings.
