This is a fire truck bed that I made for my 4.5 year old son. It is based on a commercial plan although I modified the plan significantly. I wanted a bed that could be taken down so its general suprastructure is not glued but reinforced with mortise and loose tenon joinery (yeah…the Domino was involved). I also heavily reinforced it to accomodate my son’s “active lifestyle.” Although this isn’t “fine woodworking” in the strict sense, I found it a very satisfying project to build and he seems to love it.

It may not be “Fine Woodworking” but it brought a huge smile to my face.

nice project, my 5.5 year old would love this bed, and so I am confident to think your son does also. Very cute! My daddy made me a bed one time about the time I was 4 years old….good memory, as will this be for your son.

I can also see it as a lovely play area in the backyard (in case spouses don’t want it in the house) ...
Well done and it sure looks FINE to me!!

Hello I am Gerald from Holland.
You have built a beautiful bed.
I also want my son to build a fire truck bed.
Would you could email me the sizes?
Or maybe you have a building plan?
This because they do not have at holland.
I would be very happy.
like to hear from you.
many greetings from holland.

Hi Jim. Yup, it’s been a long time. My son is now almost 7 and still adores the bed. This has been one of the most satisfying projects. He still loves to show his friends and uses it every night. I made the bed large enough for a full sized adult so he’s much more likely to “grow out of” wanting a firetruck bed than actually not fitting in it. Best wishes.

Geoo,
I modified a commercially available plan for the bed so I can’t send you a copy of the plans without compromising their intellectual material. If you want the details, you can check out their website at: http://plans4wood.com/firetruck.htm. The plan was well worth the small investment and their decorative stickers really added a lot. Good luck. Its a fun project.
