Here are the kaleidoscopes I made for my grandkids, they are from the discontinued magazine Woodwork but you can still get back issues, this if from February 2008. The design was by Michael Cullen. I used Cherry,Mahogany,and tiger maple. The finish is padded shellac. I will wax in a few days after they harden. The design didn’t have an eye piece and it scratched when you placed it to your face so I just added one. Bill p

Nice looking, fun toys; even for adults.
I made some of them years ago. For additional enhancement I mounted some on the lathe and turned most of the cylinder round, leaving the head hexagonal so they wouldn’t roll. I also made some with a 1/8” groove cut at the joints and then filling the groove with a contrasting wood. When those were turned on the lathe they looked even better. I gave all but one away and right now I can’t fine it or I would post a picture.

i’ve been thinking of making one of those.. your’s turned out great.. i would also go with my lathe for the body.
