Cherry 2 sink vanity

Project by woodchic posted 199 days ago 1420 views 6 times favorited 59 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is the full view of the vanity that I have posted in my blogs….......This is a 2 sink cherry vanity that I designed and built myself….....people will look at me and say you mean your husband built that…......and I say no, I built it with all by myself thank you very much. I built this to go into our new house….......I put this in the down stairs bathroom. There is still a little more work to be done to it, since we are not in the house yet, I have to move on to other projects in the house, and then I will come back to it. Oh and I forgot to make sure all of the drawers were closed before I took the picture…..........oh well it finally made it on here.

Well thought design and excellently built vanity. You (not your husband) did great job.

”.....people will look at me and say you mean your husband built that……...”
I would say yes we both built it, if I were you …..LOL.

Robin, this is gorgeous. The onlay and raised panels add nice details to the vanity. Also it is nice to see you included the sapwood as well. I, personally, think that this adds to the visual interest of the piece. This is a well designed piece that would be a compliment to any home’s decor.

How did you finish it?

By the way don’t be shy about posting pictures. There is room to add more to better showcase your work if you want.

Thank you everyone for taking the time out to look and post a comment, I appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Scott! I put a sealer on it, sanded it and then unfortunately put a satin poly on it. From what I have been reading in here I wish I would have put a different finish on it…....I also carved the feet and the carving up above the drawers…...those have no finish yet….......I still have more carving to add to each side of that piece and I still want to clean up my feet a bit more.

Robin, if you wanted to add a darker tone to the cherry apply a coat of boiled linseed oil after you finish sanding the raw wood. Then apply a sealer and topcoat it with poly, if that is what you want to use. It is a little late now unless you want to strip off the finish that you have already put on but for the next project this may work for you.

Another alternative, with cherry, is to expose it to the sun for two to three weeks (watching for rain, of course). This will darken it naturally and give it an aged look.

But the vanity will darken on its own with time. So I really wouldn’t worry about it. It looks pretty good to me.

Love the project and the story!! I don’t know how many times we’ve been at the hardware store and the clerk asks my hubby what he intends to use the tool for. Hubby just shrugs and says, “Don’t know. By the time the wife is done with it I’ll be too old to use it anyway.” It’s fun to surprise people, isn’t it?

Fabulous sink vanity, Robin!

Like you, I’m building many of the items in the house while building the house itself. Just finished my first window and door (have many yet to do) and part of the facade. I’m sure you probably have the same feelings as I, in that you get more anxious to move in as each day progress. Good luck and look forward to seeing more of your incredible work.

Robin, love the use of the sapwood with the cherry! The feet interest me, are they ecathus leaves (excuss the spelling) which is a reference to Greek or Roman architecture, trying to remember my design theory at Camosun College during my Fine Furniture course. Also, did you do the carving? Great project

Hi Steve,

Thank You. Yes, it was my own interpretation of ancathus leaves for the feet, and yes I carved the feet as well as the piece on the top above the drawers. The feet were the first 3 dimentional carvings I have ever done. I didn’t scetch them before I started, I band sawed my feet out first and then I began carving the first foot. I did the second foot by looking at the first foot that I carved.
