This is a silver maple burl from a tree cut down at the Broadmour Hotel here in Colorado Springs. It is seven inches high and twenty two inches across. It had alot of character for a silver maple. Got to keep on the good side of the local tree trimmers to get pieces of wood like this.

another beauty … 22 inches is really big…. how much did the block of wood weigh before you worked it ?

It was some where around 20 pounds. Have a winch on the lathe for the really heavy pieces.

That is a beautiful piece of timber and a gorgeous bowl. I plan on harvesting a silver maple burl in the next few days. I can only hope mine has half the character that yours does.

That should be a really sweet piece of wood. Look forward to seeing what comes out of this.

Nice piece. I keep trying to tell my wood cutter friends, to quit cutting into small pieces big money wood. They sell a whole cord for what a few of the better pieces would bring.

I really like the edge treatment, inside and out. And that is some dramatic lumber. Great choice of substrate and a beautiful turning.
