elleptical table

Project by mfike posted 206 days ago 446 views 6 times favorited 12 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I built three of these tables about a month ago. Two were to sell to a guy who asked me to make them and one for my fiancee. I now have orders for two more. It was really a fun project for me with the tapered, curved legs and kerf bent aprons. The top is walnut, legs are maple and I used birch plywood for the aprons. I wasn’t satisfied with the look of the birch so I put some maple veneer over it and I think it looks much better that way. The legs are rabbetted at the top with hanger bolts screwed into them that go though the aprons to a lock nut to secure them. It’s a pretty basic project actually, but I really enjoyed it anyway. The finish is BLO, tung, poly as are most of my projects. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful design, very graceful, and finish makes for a very handsome table!

You’ve done a beautiful job with this. I assume the plywood apron is bent with a series of kerfs cut in the back side?

It looks great. Thanks for posting it.

Really excellent work. I agree with noknot…. doesn’t look simple to me!

Yeah woodhacker, the plywood aprons have a kerf cut every 1/4 inch. I cut them deep enough to leave the veneer and about half of the next layer. I had to experiment with the depth, if you cut too much it gets flimsy, not enough and it becomes hard to bend around table body. Thanks for the comments. Oh and I agree it doesn’t look simple. I was somewhat hesitant to take on the project, but once I got into it there really isn’t any difficult skill needed to do it. The legs are time consuming, but not really difficult.
