Last year (2008) I finally built my new workshop. I was without a workshop for a little over 2 years since my old house and shop were destroyed. So I decided to build the workshop that I never had the space to build before! Sure feels good to not be working under a carport anymore with a few portable tabletop tools on wheels.
I insulated my shop with spray foam insulation and it sure does cut down on sound. All you can hear outside when I run power tools is the frogs and cows. I installed 47 electrical outlets downstairs in hopes of never needing another extension chord. Ran 4 circuits that are 220v each, but wish I would have added another 3 or 4.
Since building my new shop I seem to spend many weekends and very late nights out there having way too much fun! My wife never complains when I walk back to the house at 3am because she knows how much my wood shop means to me. I am building a quarter sawn oak desk for her that she mentioned liking just as a little show of appreciation.
Now it is time to have some fun again!

Greg, could you give us a few dimensions on the shop? Was it built by you or was there a plan you bought and had someone else put it up? I’m looking for something about 20×24 but wondered what size yours was. I like the idea of a second level as well, so a height value would be nice to know as well.
Beautiful shop for sure. I’m tired of dreaming and need to get started.

I am overwhelmed by all the great comments i have received from everyone. Woodworkers are great people and I am so happy to be a part of this website.
To answer some questions:
My shop is 24×40 ft. and the ceilings are 10 ft. I always liked a barn style roof and it made sense because it provides so much useable attic space. I don’t know whether to call the attic an “attic or a second floor”. The attic ceiling is 11’6”. (1920 sq. ft. total)
I have never lived anywhere before where I had enough space to build this big of a shop, so after having my other house and shop destroyed by the hurricane/flood and moving, I decided I had better build my dream shop” now or I might not get the chance again. I did not buy any plans to work from but just told the builder that I wanted this size and design.
I have 14 windows that are all double insulared galss and I bought them all for a total of $300 from the “Habitat for Humanity” store! What an Unbelievable bargain! They were all new. My only regret is that I did not buy bigger windows, but at the Habitat store you buy what they have available and can’t special order. Found these windows over 4 different trips there.
My wife has been so very supportive and she is now doing the landscaping around the shop since she loves to work outside gardening.

Greg,
Very to sorry to hear about all of your loss’s. But Miracles happen even in the worst of times, you and your wife are still alive, AND you got a great new shop.
As one new member to another, you will not find a better woodworking web on the web, or a more friendly and helpful bunch of members. Welcome to Lumberjocks.

Fabulous – Never, Never, Never let it go!!! Replacing or finding a new shop always seems to take second fiddle to other neccessities! When I shopped for a new house they all came without a garage – but each one had a terrific shop!!! And sometimes I can even park a car in there!!! NOT!! I am totally jealous!!

A wonderful shop and what appears to be some very nice machines. We can’t all have a dream shop like that, but for me it is a symbol of another woodworker’s love for the craft. What can be better than that? Congratulations and looking forward to seeing more of your projects.
