Cedar Birdhouse

Project by rooster posted 201 days ago 384 views 2 times favorited 3 comments Add to Favorites Watch

So…confession. I pretty much stole this design from a guy that lives in my neighborhood….and….he’s the one that gave me the cedar. So I have to give him most of the credit. Check out some of his projects at http://lumberjocks.com/grimejr

As I was building this, I had an unintended design change. His design called for a peaked roof. As I was routing around the template, I discovered the router bit was dulll when it sheared off the peak. So, capped roof it is. I actually like it better this way.

The finish is just a wiped on tung oil. Now I’ll wait to see if it will get occupied this season.

Neat birdhouse. Are the brass screws so you can remove the bottom to clean it out at the end of the season? Does tung oil last pretty good outside? I have never tried it.

PCorl, the screws do allow for the bottom to be removed. I think you are supposed to clean with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water between tenants. The tung oil does ok outdoors. The cedar is obviously rot resistant, but the tung oil helps. In the hot North Carolina sun, not many finishes will last through the summer. I had about 7 coats of spar on a redwood table…lasted 2 years. Luckily, this birdhouse is in a jap maple which provides some shade. Thanks for looking!
