This is a band saw box of my own design. I created two designs at the same time. The first was called Diversion and this one was called Inversion. For some reason I decided to build this one first.

I had come across some 3/8 maple at the HD that had this wonderful spalting pattern. I wanted to display it on the outside of a box but didn’t have enough maple to do so. I decided to laminate a block with extra pieces I had in the shop. The center two layers are Canary wood. The next two outer layers are Purpleheart. These layers were sandwiched by the 3/8 Maple I wanted to show off.

The design and the woods surpassed my expectations! The Canary wood in the middle displayed an almost inlay look that you can see in the last picture. The maple is fairly muted on the front but since drawers disrupt the face, I wanted the spalt on the back. As you can see, the back displays the figure of the maple and the wonderful greys and blacks of the spalt.

After a coat of natural stain I utilized several layers of thinned polyurethane. I used 0000 steel wool in between coats to help smooth out the finish. The hardware is home center stock.

Overall, I am very happy with this piece. Now I need to make the Diversion box to compliment it.

This is a really nice box. You chose a nice set of woods for its construction and your entry points are a challenge to find.

Nice job.

Well done that man! Great original design, you may find there are a number of permutations of this design. I look forward to seeing many more! Timber blend worked well.

I just glued up the “Diversion” version two days ago and took it to the band saw yesterday. I cut out the drawers and put it all back together. I spent an hour or so on the sander today and will be getting to the finish sanding and a first layer of finish in the next couple of days. It’s a flip flop of this design with the wider part on the bottom. I was going to make it of the same exact woods but decided to use up a few scraps that have been haunting me from the wood box for a while.

This one will have another outer layer of the curly maple with purpleheart right behind it on both sides. Then I put a layer of black walnut, canary wood, and padauk in the center.

I’ll post the pictures when I get there! Thanks for all the comments and support.
