Antigua - Going on tour

Project by trifern posted 206 days ago 559 views 0 times favorited 25 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I am pleased to announce “Antigua” was selected by the jury to be included in the American Association of Woodturners – Spirit of the Southwest exhibition. The show will premiere in Albuquerque during the annual AAW symposium and then travel to various galleries across the US and end up at the AAW gallery in St. Paul, MN. “Antigua” was one of thirty pieces selected.

”The works selected exemplify sound technical skills and reflect the aesthetic capabilities of the artists whose creations will make this a memorable and outstanding exhibition. We are pleased by the diversity of styles, materials and techniques this exhibit will showcase, and how the work reflects the scope of contemporary woodturning.” -AAW

I am truly honored and humbled to be included in such an elite exhibition.

congratulations Joe…. It is an awesome piece. With only your pieces, you could probably create your own show/gallery.

Joe, this is a wonderful experience for you and we wish you well on the tour. To be selected for a tour like this by a juried group speaks volumes about your talent and craftsmanship.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your talent will be enjoyed by many (and in person)! I know you will do well in your art. You have many great opportunities in front of you. Enjoy the journey.

I’d love to know where the tour is scheduled, as just maybe I’ll get to attend a showing.

After reviewing your Gallery, I am curious as to how you managed to select this particular turning. Your works have evolved greatly since your introduction to turning and every piece shows that you are pushing yourself to create new ideas and emotions in your work.

So, I’m asking: “How did you decide to enter this piece, selected among all of your wonderful works?”

Joe, I can’t think of anyone who has developed so quickly in a specific area of woodworking as you have with your turnings. This is recognition that is more than very well deserved.

Congratulations!

I think it would be pretty cool if you could post on LJ the dates and cities it will be displayed in…That way any LJ’s in the area who have the desire could see it first hand.

Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for all the compliments. They mean a lot to me.

mmh, the deadline for submitting pieces was 3 months ago. I picked this piece because I felt it met the criteria of capturing the “Spirit of the Southwest.” The fiddle back represents the origins of Native American vessels of coil pots. The turquoise color with the mineral streaks represents what the natives mined and used to create some of their finest art.

Terry, you have been a dear friend and mentor. You gave me my very first lesson on the lathe and a lot of my best pieces came from the wood you gave me. In fact, the fiddle back ash used to create “Antigua” was a gift from you. I can never repay you for all that you have done for me!

I will provide more details about the exhibition when they become available.

Joe

Joe,

We all knew that it was just a matter of time for you to make it to “the big time.” The only one who seems surprised is you. Your turnings have truly evolved into fine art and I heartily congratulate you on your willingness to learn and grow and still be true to your vision, even as it matured and formed itself. May all of the good that you put into each piece come back to you on this journey that you have undertaken.

Congrats. Make sure that you ask Tib for a copy of the photo shoot and if there is going to be a catalog from the exhibit. I had a piece in “Rounding the Four Corners” last year, but unfortunately, that show didn’t produce a catalog. I believe the National AAW events do.

I plan on going to Hartford next year even if I have to walk from New Jersey. Have fun in Albuquerque.
