While visiting friends up in TN, they had some errands to run and were kind enough to drop me and my pruning saw off at the woods. While there I found a couple of spoons and hauled them back with a few twisties for walking sticks. The first one I found in the weathered root of an upturned tree. I think it might be an ogre spoon but that hasn’t been confirmed by the University. Of course, I had to clean it up a bit but that’s about all. It actually has loads of character that the camera doesn’t seem to be interested in. Not sure of the wood… Elm maybe?? Anybody know?
The second spoon was hiding inside a little sapling that looked to have been damaged during the rut season. That part became the bowl and again, not sure of the yellowish wood. Both pieces are tough as can be, not brittle at all. Totally different spoons but they constantly compete to be picked up. I am tempted to do a series of ‘found wood’ spoons since that is the only wood I can afford just now. grin

nice shapes. what are they finished with ? how fine did you sand them. real eye candy !

Dan ~ I sanded each to 500 grit (using Klingspor) and then I used that gray pad (alternative 0000 steel wool). Then took a clean piece of that pad and dipped it into a mix of 50% Behlen’s Salad Bowl finish/50% mineral spirits and polished the wood with the wet pad (did that twice). Wiped off the excess vigorously and then a light coat of wax so that they would feel good to the hand.

Cool, I love hiking just for that reason. I’ve seen and found so many unusual things over the years. Like a treasure hunt. My last find was a bowl shaped rock. Weighed little over 100 lbs, I hiked it out about a mile over rough ground, my friends just laughed, but I got it home. It a thing of beauty. It holds water and is a great bird bath. Good hunting!!
