This hollow form vessel was turned from some walnut laying on top of the firewood pile. It measures 5.5 inches tall and is 4.25 inches wide. It is finished with wipe-on poly. It was turned sopping wet so there was some movement, especially around the knots and piths.
All comments, especially critiques, are welcomed and appreciated.

Joe, this is a beautiful save. Natural finishes, such as this one, are my favorite type of turnings. With walnut Mother Nature instills a wonderful warmth and beauty that we, as woodworkers, cannot improve on but only bring to the surface. You did a nice job of bringing out the inner beauty that was resident in the original “piece of firewood”.
Thanks for sharing this, Joe.

Great looking piece of Walnut. Amazing what can be done with a piece of firewood. Great job Joe.

Another beauty. I’m a birder and your works are liken to collecting bird eggs. Ever looked at a collection of bird eggs? Think you’d find it interesting.

That is one beautiful piece of Walnut. It takes a woodworker’s eye to see that beauty in the rough. Well chosen. And, of course, your turning is fantastic; bringing out the best of the wood.

Very nicely done. This piece has a lot of warmth to it. The shape is sensuous and begs the eye to touch the soft, round curves. The movement in the grain is quite striking, yet calming. This piece reminds me of a Rubenesque nude. (Fat, soft and a little rippley.)

Ditto on all of the above. I can’t believe that was firewood.

If I were you, I’d label the firewood pile “Future Projects” and order a couple more loads for the Summer. I can see what they’ll say in two hundred years about this piece “He was so good, he would grab wood from the firewood pile just to try and make it a challenge.”

Joe, I just saw this one after viewing “Peter”. My comments there apply to this piece twice over…Wow, I love the grain variances in this piece…and to think this could have gone “up in smoke”. Beautiful save.
Thanks for posting it.
