The Calgary Stampede for 2015 is now over so I can show you a boot I carved from a piece of California Redwood. The dimensions on the wood are about 10×6 x 3.
Cutting out the boot blank I then proceeded to make dust with my typhoon burrs, shaping, and final details. Redwood has its inherent property of being hard and soft with a lot of figuring. This wood is nice to work with but has some issues when it comes to the finishing part.
I kept the detailing to a minimum and chose to carve some waves and a few wrinkles. Here the wood was telling me how much mutilation was acceptable. The grain and colour is so powerful that detailing would not have enhanced the piece, in my opinion.
Sealed with a lacquer finish, I present the Redwood boot!

Very nice piece.

I have worn “western/cowboy” boots for 55+ years.

Looks real enough; That I want a pair in my size!

Seriously terrific job! I bet the hours expended are many.
