This is my very first woodworking project. I recently organized, designed, and participated in the building of a fence for me and a few neighbours, and I enjoyed working with the wood. I decided to try my hand at a little bench to give my daughter for her first birthday.

I found a plan for an adult-scale bench online and scaled it down to the right size for a toddler. Had to make some adjustments because lumber dimensions don’t always scale well – and I was using 100% offcuts from the fence.

I think it turned out well for my first crack at woodworking. Learned some lessons (there’s a slight wobble, but since it’s going on the grass, it’ll settle).

I used chalk paint and wax to finish it off. I originally tried a semi-transparent, white stain, but you could see all the spots where I’d put wood filler in the countersunk screw-holes. No good.

Very cool. Keep working on projects you have a connection with and you’ll really enjoy making sawdust. Kids and grandkids love stuff made for them and then they want to make stuff too. My granddaughter and I are saving ice cream sticks to build a house.

What a great little bench! What is the final size, bamugo? Be advised, it will become a step stool for your daughter. She’ll be getting into stuff you never dreamed she could reach! Thanks for sharing and welcome to Lumberjocks!

I have a few projects lined up – need to build a gate for the fence, and my sister-in-law has requested cat shelves (a network of shelves throughout her apartment that her cat can walk along). It’s going to be fun!

The seat is 6.5” and the bench itself is about 2.5’ long. I have a bunch more scraps from the fence and I’m going to knock out a few more of these and see if I can sell them on a local online moms marketplace. The little one just took her first steps yesterday! I wonder how long it will be before your prediction comes true :)
