My neighbor had asked me to make fifty small stands to hold laminated photographs to be given to the fifty guests of her husband’s birthday party. I found a 5BF 3/4” padauk board at a local lumber store—about what fifty small stands would take, plus, after resawing from 3/4 to 1/2”, I ended up with some 1/8” thick leftover boards that would make nice veneer. The stands are 6-1/2” × 1-1/2” × 1/2”. The cutting and routing took a couple of hours; just finished sanding them and am ready to hand them over to the neighbor. She will spray coat them with clear shellac. She is happy with the outcome and I hope the guests will like them too.

Thanks Greg! We first thought that oak would be a good wood for these small pieces. The big box stores in the neighborhood charged so much for a bland face-sawn oak boards that we decided to go with padauk from the lumber yard (cheaper and pretty). QSWO was our first choice but the pieces are small, so all the nice flecks would be lost in cutting.
