My First Box

Project by Scrappys_Squirt posted 213 days ago 619 views 0 times favorited 14 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hi everyone, This is my first box that I made, with the help of my dad, “Scrappy” on here. I used his shop and tools since I don’t have any (yet). He helped, or rather I helped him design it and I did some of the cutting and gluing and I sanded and stained it with 2 coats of wipe on poly gloss ( yes also his). So its really more of our box then mine, but hopefully someday I can figure it all out on my own.

The box is made of Ash, and the inlay and keys are Jatoba I believe (correct me if I’m wrong dad). Its dimensions are 8.5 X 6 X 3 inches roughly. We made the lid to just lift off, and put a thin trim piece around the lid that fits down into the box to hold it in place. My favorite thing about this box is the weird ghost worm paths that you can see but you can’t feel them, and the strange figuring on the inside bottom that looks like someone wearing a cloak (seen in the last picture). It definitely has a lot of character to it.

Well let me know what you think any and all comments and/or critiques are welcome. I only hope that someday I can come close to some of the awesome projects I’ve seen on here. Thanks again Dad for helping me I love when we get to spend the time together!!

Thanks for looking, Scrappy’s Squirt

What a nice looking box! You did a super job. I really like the keys and the inlay and the grain of the wood. Super! Does he give lessons??? ;o)

Great job Squirt. It all looks good. The finnish came out good as well.

Next we will get you on the scroll saw and you can show these guys how to do some inlay/marquetry.
(maybe yours will be better then mine!)

Great box and lots of fun working together with my “tom boy” Since all I had was 2 girls!

See you tomorrow!

This is a really nice box. The jatoba keys and inlay give a nice contrast. You photographed the box well, too.

Thanks for the post.

Wow, great looking box! And it’s made even more special because you had your dad help with you. I miss doing the same with my Grandpa, you’ll appreciate those skills learned from him forever.

Your first box, you wouldn’t know it. If you have the time maybe you could blog about how you did the inlays. I’m new to this and would love to know how you did it.

Sawtooth,
Since the inlay on top was my fault I’ll let you know, Measure twice cut once!

The top panel was cut a little too small to fit the daddo along the edge. Re-cut it even all the way around, then framed with Jatoba to bring it back up to correct size. Easiest fix other then making the box smaller.(didn’t hurt it gave it a little more style)

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone! Alot of it was dad. He’s great to share his tools and help me. I agree that it may have been a mistake that brought on the inlay but it looks so much better then it would have without it and the keys we put to match.

Saw4fun- the board was long enough that we got all but the one corner to match up good like that.

Nice job Squirt, Not many people tackle grain wrapping, mitered, splined corners for their first box. Tell dad that you’re ready for your own bench, next to his
