There’s that purty walnut again, nice shape and design, and they’re getting bigger too.

You really picked a interesting piece of walnut! Turned into a unique turning!! I like the way you centered the grain around the curve! Great piece!!

Joe, this is another beautiful piece. You have done a great job of bringing out what Mother Nature created in this piece of wood.

I really like the color of the walnut in this one. Great turning Joe. The BLO gives it a nice satin look too.
In the bottom picture on the left are there three small areas where the grain broke free, or is that just the way the wood absorbed the BLO? That’s not meant to be criticism, I’m just curious if that’s the case,... was it because the growth rings run nearly parallel to the curvature of the turning. Regardless, it’s a fantastic turning.
Thanks for posting it.

Martin, I believe what you are seeing are imperfections in the wood. I suspect there were some branches coming out there at one time. If you look below the three areas, you can see how the rings have a wave to them. There is also some color streaking running down from the one on the left. They were visible prior to applying the BLO. If you look at the opposite view (middle left) you can see the knot. Although the knot appears small, it does run through to the other side.
DocK, the actual finish I used was 30% Boiled Linseed Oil, 20% polyurethane, and 50% naphtha.
