Project Information

This is the second of five new candle trays that I designed in this series. I call this one "Duke" (SLD509 on my site)

I cut this one from 1/2" walnut on the scroll saw. I love walnut. For this tray, I simply finished it by spraying it with a couple coats of spray shellac. It really brings out the color and grain and looks very beautiful.

The center of the tray is cut on a slight bevel so that it can be pushed slightly down (back) into the frame and it locks into place, raising the frame ever so slightly up off the table and giving the piece interest and dimension.

You can see a video of me cutting this type of tray here:

I hope you like it. I loved cutting the flowing design. It is my favorite kind of fretwork.

Thanks for looking!

Nice Sheila. I like the scroll design even better than the last one, but they are both very nice.

Thanks, Mike. This one is actually a bit easier, but I also like it better. I appreciate your kind words. :)

Very nice holder!

How do you manage to make money selling those at the price you do? How long would one of those take you to make?

I don't sell the finished pieces. The prices are for the PATTERNS only. I can't make a living making pieces and selling them. People in my area won't spent the money. They wouldn't even pay enough to cover the price of the WOOD unfortunately, let alone the finished pieces.

Others, who do them for hobbies and gifts are good customers. The occasional scroller who does shows likes the patterns as well. But with all the cheap crap from China around, people are conditioned to spending so little on something so intricate that there is really very little market for it. Thank goodness there are enough who scroll for a hobby and for the pleasure of scrolling and continue to support my pattern business.

Thank you for your kind comments. :)

Thank you, Candy! Yes - Walnut is one of my favorite woods to scroll. The photos are sometimes hard to take because it is so dark, but it sure is pretty. :)

Sorry I missed this when you posted it, Sheila. Another example of your excellent design and scroll saw cutting work. Well deserved top three too.
