Widow-yo

This Widow-Yo was inspired by the black widows at my house. My girlfriend and I went out the other night (they seem to come out at night) and walked around the house killing about 9 of these. It also encouraged me to look up these spiders to see the danger.

Here is what I found: http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/entomology/444-422/444-422.html

This yo-yo is made out of maple and sports Padauk hour glasses. This yo-yo is for sale.

This yo-yo is cherry with a walnut burl butterfly and is also for sale. PM me if you have interest.

You have some huge Black Widows. That’s the largest I have ever seen. Keep em at your house please. I love the Yo-Yo. Truelly an amazing job on both of the Yo’s.

Jerry, This little guy scared the crap out of me. I took this picture and then sprayed her with some raid. Then I bent over to take a picture of another one under my bench and I guess she started heading my way. My girlfriend freaked out and made me jump because supposively I was to close. So I guess it didn’t scare me, she did. LOL. It had been a long time since I walked around the house so they’ve had all winter to reproduce. I need to be more on the ball. There was way to many of them. Thanks for the kind words.

Like I said before, I have never seen any that big with such a distinct mark on the back. You got some great pictures though.

What a cool idea for a yo-yo. It looks beautiful. I found some bamboo shoots someone was throwing away and thought I might have a use for them. Back home, I was cleaning them out, and saw the distinctive red hourglass inside. Turns out it was a brown widow – more venomous, but injects less per bite, and isn’t aggressive like black widows – but it sure woke me up! Had 3 egg sacs.

Got to say when you said you were going to make yo-yos I thought you had lost it. “My Bad”! Those are cool! Great job on those. You know the yo-yo was originally a weapon, so the Black widow is a cool design. Great!!!!!!!

PurpLev, I just finished the widow-yo today. I posted the cherry one on craigslist with no luck. I will probably make them available at my etsy store. I’ve had the store for quite some time now, and haven’t made a sale. I’m skeptical. I need to stop playing with it before I get attatched or drop it. LOL Thanks everyone for the comments.

forget about craigslist Keith… it’s mostly aimed at a certain market, and I think you’ll be selling yourself short by choosing that route. I know it’s easier to go there, and you’d rather sell anything than nothing- but give yourself credit where credit is due ;o) and put it out where it belongs. This is unique art!

Is it legal to post a price here on LJ with your project?

The yo-yo is very unique and a lot of people that look at buying something of this quality want it for a song and don’t realize the time and effort put into it.Keep up the great work. How do you sleep at night with these critters lurking about LOL

Shame about having to kill them.

The link you reference said this about the widow:

In general, widow spiders are a very timid group of spiders that will only bite when threatened.

Dangerous but not necessarily deadly
Although it is true that human deaths have occurred from widow spider bites, it is important to note that modern fatalities from widow bites occur in less than 1 percent of all people bitten. The chances of dying are so low that one researcher compared the chances of dying from a widow spider bite to your chances of being struck by lightning.

Steve, I agree that it’s a shame to have to kill them. But there’s 3 kids here that are 4, 6, and 7 that play around where these critters are lurking. Knowing that that 1% could be my daughter or one of my girlfriends kids just isn’t worth it. It’s just part of life I’m not willing to risk.
