This is the result of my girlfriend’s school project. She had to synthesize two things from different aspects of culture. I convinced her to make something and this is what resulted. I guided her in the preperation and got her to help out all along the way so that she could be fairly graded. She did a great job. I’ve decided that I could really use a person in the shop to do nothing but sand! (not that all she did was sand)
It has two secret compartments and is all solid wood.
I would like to sell this eventually but don’t know what to offer for it or where to sell it. I’m open to suggestions!
What would YOU include to mix Asian and Classical Architecture? Thanks All!

Attractive and into woodworking? You better put a ring on that finger before she gets swept up! The piece looks great. What do the characters mean? As for your question, I think I would incorporate columns into the piece maybe along the sides. I immediately think columns when I think of classic architecture. However I notice on the sides of yours it looks like squared columns with a base and top. I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Great looking project!!
I, too, think the combination of columns and the Asian influence of the roof line and symbols works well.
What grade did she get?

The characters mean ‘spirit’. I think in the future, we will put some scroll work in the middle arch and that will tie in the characters a little more to a theme. She just submitted it yesturday so I’m still waiting to hear about a grade. Thanks guys!

Great work, and I like the chinese letters too.
You know it’s a bit funny, because when we, Japanese, make something, we never write these letter in Japanese, almost everybody uses English, because we think it’s cool, and you write Japanese or Chinese, and you think it’s cool.
