I wanted to build a nice desk / table for my shop that I would use to tinker with electronics and play on. After working on it for some time now, it’s finally finished.
The design of the desk features four drawers – two on each side. I didn’t want two very deep drawers, so it made more sense to make four, especially since I’m not planning on keeping the desk against the wall. In that sense, it’s more of a table / desk that’s meant to be located in the middle of a room so you can have access to it from all sides.
In terms of wood, I used roughsawn walnut for the base and the drawers, and roughsawn mahogany for the top. The frame is constructed using dowels, and for the drawers I decided to go with half blind dovetails.
It has a hand rubbed wipe-on polyurethane finish, with a final coat of tung oil wax.
I created two videos for this project on my YouTube channel.
The first video goes over planing the wood by hand, building the base and the the top:
The second video goes over building the halfblind dovetailed drawers & finishing the whole desk:
Please check out the videos for a more in-depth look of the process of building this handcrafted walnut desk.
