This is a concept piece for a series of sculptural turnings I am working on. This is my Red Widow Spyder. I still have to create the face and fangs for the piece. This has been a very challanging piece for me from concept to execution and it is pushing me which I think we all enjoy as wood artists. It is 7 inches in diameter.

Whoa!!!!!!!!! This is cool, and I think of stone for fangs, as I cut gems also, so all kinds of things come to mind in this piece. This is one of the best things I’ve seen on LJ’s. Where’s the hour glass?

I love the flowing, sculptural quality of the legs. I like the dyeing also. Why only six legs? Thanks for sharing.

Creepy, but beautiful. And I thought I was getting to like spiders. Maybe this one got into a fight and lost two legs.

Awesome! Truly extraordinary, just love the texture and concept. It says touch me and yet repulses at the same time.

I would seriously consider leaving off the fangs and face. It looks so creepy and interesting the way it is now with the hole in the front. I really like it. It does seem like it needs 8 legs though if you are going to call it a spider.
But if you just called it “thing” and left it as is, it’s so cool and mysterious. It leaves more to the imagination. At first glance it makes you say, wow, is it a spider? Is it an alien? Is it a bug? And makes you look at it and think about it even more.
Either way, great concept and incredible execution.

IF you added a large pincher it could be a crab for the rest of it’s life. Very interesting piece.
