Handpainted, Handcarved, Handmade Bed

Project by dennis mitchell posted 213 days ago 988 views 0 times favorited 30 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This handmade bed is headed to some real nice folks at the North Wind Gallery in Weiser, Idaho. It started life as a log bed and just kept changing. It is a queen size bed made from Alder. The painting is aniline dye with acrylic paint highlights. The finish is Conversion varnish. I’m not sure if it would fall under any style. I was thinking arts and crafts, but it might be more folk art. What do you think?

Dennis,

What a great looking bed. I agree that it has the Arts and Crafts feel and with the out line of the carving with the tree trunks a greene and greene cloud lift affect. Very nice.

Are you placing it in the gallery for sale or is it being sold to the gallery. Weiser Idaho, I have a cousin that lives it Payette Idaho not to far from Weiser. I haven’t been to Weiser for quite some time.

This is a gorgeous bed!!! As for what style it would fall under just try “Gorgeous Beds”!!! I am glad it evolved from a log bed to this, you should be really proud of it.

Very nice, Dennis. Great carvings. It does have an Arts and Crafts feel to it, but down here it would fall into the “Texas Style” furniture, maybe a little more refined. Nice design. Thanks for the post.

Distinctly Mitchell style. A combination of Rustic and Arts and Crafts and a bit of Whimsy thrown in for good measure. The carving and the painting are fantastic.

I absolutely love the colors and the carving! As for style…don’t try to define it. Just enjoy it as the masterpiece it is!

very nice work Dennis. I vote for “Folk-Art”.

I told you a couple of years ago, that I think this type of work is your forte. Great job, great carving, beautiful carved image. Can you expand on the “story” of the carving.

Very well done Dennis – I checked out the North Wind Gallery and your work should fit in there very well. The next time we travel through Weiser – I am going to make sure I stop there – maybe some of your work will be on display -

Real beautiful bed Dennis, very artistic. I have carved a few things in alder myself and have found it very nice to work with. Everyone here in Noway say that it is a much under-used wood. I agree.

Thanks Thos!
Less than 6 weeks after delivery, I get told they are closing down the gallery. Two weeks building it, a couple hundred in materials, Over 500 miles on the road delivery and pick up. Being an artist sucks! I’m a little pissed…
