My try at some cutting boards

Project by DuaneEDMD posted 220 days ago 694 views 1 time favorited 13 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I have to thank all the lumberjocks out there that have posted their cutting boards here. They peeked my interest and these things are really fun to design and make. Please keep up your great work so I feel inspired to try new things. Thanks for looking.

Dang that’s nice! What is that wood in the middle of the last two photos (and I see it’s also interspersed throughout the other board, too)?

The first board is maple and cherry. The second board is maple, walnut and cherry. The middle wood you ask asking about is cherry. When I flipped the blocks for the end grain, I was pleasantly surprised as well. Thanks for looking.

Very nicely done. The patterns are quit unique and elegant. I’m thinking parts of those logs we salvaged may end up as cutting boards.

“The second board is maple, walnut and cherry” Did you mean to type Oak ? Very nice boards : )

I like how the first board has two woods of similar coloring, but differing grains. Make for a pleasing pattern.
Great job on them!

The cutting boards are striking, but I have one question. Does the fact that the seams line up decrease the board’s durability? I’d be concerned about splitting along the seams as the different woods seasonally moved. Has this been a problem for you with these designs?

This has not been a problem yet. The boards are fairly “young” in their life-cycle right now but they are in use in my house and are holding up well to date. I did apply a liberal coat of TBII glue to both faces and clamped well…..here’s to hoping they stay together.

Never try to put one over on Dusty56. He’ll catch you out every time. Caught me, didn’t you mate?
Loverly patterns appear in endgrain and sometimes surprise you.
As far as durability of TB II and the seams, some of my boards are over 4 years old and used every single day and just as good now as when I made them.
Top Job Keep Up The Good Work.

I use nothing but TB II on all of my boards….not a single problem to date : )

Hey Larry , how ya doing , Mate ? Ever since a “friend”tried to tell me that Ash was White Oak ,(he was certain that he was correct) I have learned to recognize different species from both their end grain and flat grain. My comment here was only placed to help a possible newbie viewing this post from being led astray by the description. : ) ...No offense intended…....Peace and Happiness to all
