Project Information

Along time ago when puppies were the oldest animal and cassette tapes were the next best thing to sliced bread…...

I made this box 25 years ago in my high school woodshop class. It has ridden around in my car holding my cassettes until about 7 years ago when I heard they came out with this new gadget called a compact disc or as the kids call them CD's. hehe.. So the box had about 18 years of sliding around in my car getting scuffed up and all dirty looking. When I was doing the boxes for my niece and nephew (just recently posted) I decided it was time to refinish my cedar box that has served me so well.

On the top of the box there used to be a sharp edge where I used the table saw to miter the edges a little and it left the top of the box flat. Well when I was sanding the old varnish off to get down to the wood those edges took a little bit of a beating so I decided to smooth them out a little and give the top a little more of a contoured look. I think it turned out better looking than the original look.

Now that cassettes have gone by the wayside I'm not sure what I will use the box for. I guess that will be determined at a later date :D

Unfortunately I did not take any before pictures.. I will try to remember next time. :p

It's quite a testament to how well you built it in the first place. It has nice lines, interesting features in the wood, and now that finish pops!

Cassettes were new-fangled technology when I was in high school. Will my 8-tracks fit in there?

Good looking box after all these years!

Beautiful keepsake, hang on to it and give it to your wife, if you're not married, maybe you will someday, get some don jer paint and some flox and make the inside feel like velvet, and give it to her, to put all the diamonds you're going to buy her, in.

Cedar, mmmmm, one of my favorites. Tennessee Red, Western Red or Incense? Really nice refinish, making a good box better.

it's beautiful!!!
and to think that it has endured 20 years of toss and tumble.
Gosh it's gorgeous.
You don't need to put anything in it - -just sit it somewhere and go "oooh ahhh"

It's a great box and I love opening them up and smell the cedar, But after 20 years it probably has faded some. I think they make cedar oil to replenish the scent on the inside of the box.
