I finally got some time to make the nesting box for the coop. I’m hoping the dimensions work out. The last set I made had larger spaces but it was also used as part of the coop enclosure. I used left over t-111 (I wasn’t going to waste left overs from $40/sheet stock). The case is joined with pocket screws and the face frame is tacked on with glue, screws and, 18 ga. brads. It is 48” long, 12” deep and tall with each box being 16” wide. I made a 2 1/2” nest/egg retainer board on the bottom and completed the frame with old 3/4” pine cut offs that conceal the t-111 edges
We only have 6 Rhode Island Reds at the moment so 3 spaces should be good, I can always build another 3 or whatever and stack them together. This is not painted or sealed because I was afraid of maybe poisoning the chicks.
Should I drill holes in the sides for ventilation? We got up to 90 degrees today…
Actually today and yesterday (5/27-5/28) the temp in the coop was 105 degrees! They stay out in the shade mostly… I will not buy AC for them and that’s final! ;0)

It’s been a long time since I have been in a chicken coop; at least 45 years, but I think you could get another box in 4 feet. It got up in the 90’s and 100’s when I was a kid. I don’t rmemeber any hole in the sides. The boxes were just big enough for a hen to set in. They weren’t very deep. Good luck.

Nice looking set up. About the only thing I remember about nest boxes was trying to gather eggs and finding a large chicken snake. I was in the 3rd grade and my mother would not let me shoot it with the shot gun. While trying to convince her that I knew what to do, the gas man arrived to fill our tank and he got the very enviable task (at the time) of dispatching the snake.

My chickens are envious. I may get to skip building my nesting boxes, neighbor says he’s got some old ones in the back of an old barn. Guess the ladies will be happy with what they get. These boxes look luxorious for some feathered friends.

I built a coop about four years ago that also had nesting boxes that looked just like yours. Don’t be upset if rarely you find an egg in one of the boxes, after you labored so hard on them. My girls prefer to lay anywhere else but the boxes, but they free range. I found almost two dozen eggs under my garden hosta plants last summer, and they also like the cat box I keep in the garage (the cats are annoyed). One hen lays on the top of the coop. I collect what I know is fresh, but all the dozens of eggs they have hidden away…...fox, possum and coon eat well !
Nice job on the addition, hope the girls appreciate it !!

Thanks for the info. I suppose I should post a new picture of the Chicken coop DeVille (getting to cost like one). I have fenced in the immediate area (about 25’x15’) and also put shade cloth over the top to give shade and to keep raptors out. I shouldn’t have too far to go to find the hen fruit which they so far have not made…
I just added a new picture.
