Project Information

This is the second of two cabinets I built for our back porch. There are two nooks between the chimney that my wife uses for storage of small gardening tools, bird seed and a lot of other stuff that was all being housed in cardboard boxes.

The right side storage container pulls out and has two compartments for bird seed. The left side is a pull out shelf that can hold just about anything-I don't ask. The baskets are for dog leashes, collars…

I made the cabinets out of plywood and did the face frames and door frames out of poplar from the local Home Depot. Painted with latex to match the porch.

It certainly looks much better than a couple of cardboard boxes and made my wife very happy. The advantage of making stuff yourself-not to save money but to get a custom fit and meet the specifications of the person who is going to use it every day. Nothing fancy but functional.

Chris-Thanks for looking at the cabinet. It sure beats using a box where all the stuff you need seems to find its way to the bottom. It's good to keep my #1 customer happy.

I have to admit that I'd like this on my porch, too…..or in my house. Great idea and nice job

Very nicely done. The ability to customize is my favorite part, too!

I have recently retired to Richmond Hill. Suffering from wood envy. I find no reliable and cost reasonable source of hardwoods down here. Come from Indiana and had three saw mills within a stones throw. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Will. We're not as fortunate here as you were in Indiana. The closest hardwood mills are in the Western part of Georgia-as far as I been able to determine. There is a woodworking store in Georgetown called Case Woodworking Supply that has a very good selection of hardwoods and exotics finished to S2S.
I've also gotten Cherry, Poplar and Ash from a supplier called Rugby near the Savannah airport. They sell rough lumber as well as S4S in long lengths. Rugby is more geared to flooring, counter tops and stuff for finish carpenters. They don't let you pick your own boards.
Both are probably not what you are used to but worth checking out.
