Wood Spirit Carving :)

I hand carved this whimsical face in a Pine knot. I love to carve, especially wood spirits. Any place a branch of a Pine tree meets the base of the tree, a knot is formed. When the tree falls down and rots away, the only things that remain are the pitch-filled, resilient knots. It is said that there are spirits that inhabit the knots that allow them to remain in-tact long after the rest of the tree has rotted away. Every knot is unique, stable and beautiful. My job is to release the spirits!

I carve using a Foredom. It consists of a hand piece, flex shaft, hanging motor, foot pedal and a bunch of cutting accessories. If you ever want to learn to carve, it’s a great tool to own :) I like to paint using just a bit of oil paint thinned down with Walnut oil. The paint helps to accentuate my cuts.

If I can be of help to a fellow carver, woodworker or any other folks, shoot a message my way :)

Josh,

You do incredible work sir. Thank you for sharing!
I don’t know exactly how you got my distant cousins and uncles to pose for you but you made them look better than ever!

I really like your stuff, Josh, but it would take me a lifetime to catch up to you. I just started woodcarving last January, at age 62. I don’t have that lifetime (well, maybe I do, in a way)...but I’ll do what I can, along with my other projects.

I’m currently working on the Grape Leaf man by Lora S. Irish, slavishly (almost) copied from her book, learning as I go. It is fun and almost therapeutic to carve.
