This is a commissioned piece done in black walnut and Carpathian elm burl with a Baltic birch bottom. It is rather large at 10×8 x 4. The box was built using blind spline miters for strength and hinged using large barbed kerf hinges. The finish is five coats of General Finishes oil and urethane, hand rubbed to a glossy sheen.

Hey, great box! Is that floating panel a solid piece of burl or is it veneered plywood? Either way it’s a stunner.

Thank you everyone for the comments.
The panel on this one is veneered on a baltic birch plywood substrate. The top and bottom of the panel are sequence matched and indexed to give the illusion of a solid floating panel. Burls are by far my favorite. I have several other burl panel boxes in the works that will be done in a week or so: black walnut, madrone, pellin, elm, maple, and some outstanding white oak burl.

Love the burl. It really sets off the rest of the box.
