This carving project was a long road. I started this in January and have worked on it off and on since. I made this using 8/4 basswood glued together to make a 3’x5’ panel. The finial is two pieces which allows the holly wood rope to appear to wrap under the ball. There was a lot of grinding, sanding, and carving on this piece. The white areas are bleached so the grain would show thru to some extent. The stars and lettering are all hand carved using a knife.

Awesome job! I absolutely LOVE the effects the grinder did – it most certainly looks like it’s waving in the wind.

Only thing is that the words “under god” wasn’t added until 1954.

I won’t tell if you won’t though. ;-)

Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely amazing carving!! You are a great craftsman and this project definitely shows off your carving skills. Was this a project for yourself or a commission? Thanks so much for sharing your work it’s very inspirational.

This I made for a couple of woodcarving shows that I have this years but it has gained a life of it’s own. Now after my carving shows this year it will go on display at the Indiana State Museum and used to celebrate Indiana’s bicentennial.

Roger,

The only reason this has not gotten thousands of views and comments is because everyone is wondering why you posted a cloth reproduction of the flag with the pledge silk-screened on it, roped onto a pole with a metal finial, and why there is an easel behind it.

Your carving is fabulous! It absolutely looks real.
