These are small walnut boxes made using the ShopBot Desktop CNC machine and Vectric Aspire software. There are two different lids, one a domed lid with a crab cut in relief and the other a flat lid with a holly crab laminated to the surface of the walnut. In the video, below, it is particularly interesting to see how I laminated a sheet of holly to a sheet of walnut and then used the CNC machine to cut through the holly all the way into the walnut to leave a crab that is nice creamy white holly.

Walnut Flat Top with Holly Crab Applique
4-5/8” x 3-5/8” x 2”

Walnut Domed Top with Crab Carving
4-5/8” x 3-5/8” x 2-1/4”

Very cool. I have the same machine and love it. Thanks for sharing the video. I am going to put this idea on my list of things to make.

Thanks Tim. You will have to play with the cutting depths vs the thickness of the top laminate to get it right, but once you have it life is good!

Like I just said on a comment on my carved candle stand (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/161458), there’s a place for hand carving and a place for machine carving, and they can both live in harmony.

Strange. It works from the e-mail notification LJ just sent. Let’s try again by using the link symbol in the draft window: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/161458

Got it! What I like about CNC models is that “I” can make carvings. I do not have the talents to hand carve like you “carvers”, but I have a lot of admiration of this craft. Mr Pitts you are quite the furnituremaker- keep up your postings.
