18” x 21” x 2-1/2”

This is the fourth of my ‘Wood Sculptures’ made from my scrap box of left over bits and pieces from other projects. (NOTE: There are NO made from scratch pieces made especially for this project. Every piece came from my scrap box, though some have been modified to suit this piece). Like the others this one contains various woods from pine to ash to cherry, mahogany and walnut with a few other bits. The hardware is mostly brass or stainless and it is finished with high-gloss marine varnish.

I call this one ‘Recentrifuge’ in a play on words, since I make these as a way to ‘recenter’ myself when I can not concentrate on much else, i.e.,for mood therapy.

My daughter, the philistine of realism, asked me sarcastically, ‘yes but, does it do anything?’ and I answered ‘no, it just sits there’. Sadly, I was not quick enough to answer ‘yes’, and then answer the next obvious question ‘what?’ with the reply: ‘It makes people ask: ‘but, does it do anything?’’ But, I am ready now! These are lots of fun anyway, and my wife loves them and that is all the reward I need.

My scrap box still has lots of pieces in it crying out to be used, but I am done with these for a while. I want to move on – admittedly prompted by my daughter’s snark – to making something which ‘does something’, i.e., a kinetic sort of wood sculpture.

YES it does set in imagination, what we loose as we grow up from childhood.

Oh, how fun, and these go for big bucks in the right gallery.
I remember in the funny papers of the 1950’s the “Rube Goldberg” creations that did a simple task with a complex machine … You have captured that essence.
Kudos to you my friend.

Cool, Eric! It invites imagining what it could do! Thanks for sharing.

You have a truly warped mind! I love it.
Everyone is right: you could stare at it and just conjure what it does and come up with any number of “answers”
