Hi all,
This is the first picture I’ve posted since joining LJ’s. Anyway I’ve almost finished my new workbench. It is 8/4 laminated Red Oak with 4/4 pieces of walnut for the top. The joinery isn’t too fancy, by any means. But for what it is, I didn’t think it turned out too bad. As you can see from the pics the holes for the bolts are still showing. I am going to plug them with contrasting woods, oak in the walnut, and vice versa. I took some ideas and size reccomendations from several plans and pretty much winged it w/o any real set of plans. Any constructive critisim is welcome. Have a great day!

sweet mother of …. NICE BENCH! this is the design I would like to eventually follow through myself. I really like those 2 vices, I think they are the most versatile.
1 think you may want to consider is setting those legs on 4 blocks- easier to balance and prevent wobbling then on 2 long flat surfaces (I may be wrong, but it looks like that from the pictures). (usually the leg bases are curved to create those 4 “blocks” that contact the floor)

Great looking bench! I echo PurpLev on the feet by the way, and do you plan to add a board jack of some kind to go along with the shoulder vice? (Or, to my embarassment, is there one in the picture that I missed)?

This is truly a great bench. I really like the tail and shoulder vice arrangment that you have. What basic plans did you use?

Outstanding bench! Have you anticipated any potential problems with the large size of the shoulder vise? I love the oak and walnut contrast.

Thanks everyone. I really apprecaite the comments espcially coming from a group such as this. There is some major talent around here.
I’m not sure of the weight. I wondered that myself. If had to guess I would say ~225-250#.
The reasoning behind the leg setting on the bases is that it makes the legs much more rigid (prevents any racking). I haven’t seen others so I can’t compare, but the base is very sturdy.
The shoulder vise is rather large. The screw is center in the vise and the outside of the vise is ~3” thick. I put a “tourque test” to it and it didn’t budge. I hope I don’t have any problems with it.
Thanks again for the comments!

I like it, it has that “beefy” look.
I’d say it has to have good legs it is supporting that top.
