Was asked to make a gift for a Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) by his boss. I used curly maple for the sides and top, used mahogany for the corners and the trim just under the top, and used walnut for the heads-up-display(HUD). A friend of mine did the laser work for me, all that is missing is the aluminum name plate that his boss will put on later. I got a strip of multi-colored LED’s from a home hardware store wired it to a switch and a 9V battery.

The picture doesn’t do the curly maple justice, but i finished it wish super blonde shellac, wet sanded up to 800 grit, and sprayed 2 coats of aerosol lacquer. After that I used baby oil (mineral oil) and rottenstone powder to turn the finish as slick as grease. He should a happy camper.

Curly maple – $80
Walnut – free from wood shop trash can
mahogany – free from old salmon cutting board
LED strip – $15

That’s one of the more creative end of tour gifts I’ve seen! Outstanding! Looks like you have the MIG locked on! . . . . Fox1

Thanks Charles. He’s a deputy group commander, but I ended up making him 2 gifts. The other is my last posted project with mount Fuji on the rising sun.

Since we’re up in northern Japan, our real thoughts are on North Korea, Russia and China, so the MIG worked out great, you can even make out the north korea star on the jets wing and vertical stab. When he gets the gift i’ll take a higher resolution photo along with his big smile.

Nicely done. I am sure the recipient is going to love it. The heads up display is very cool.

Very nicely designed and crafted. HUD, what a great idea! The recipient should be bowled over with at the presentation. Great job.

A beautiful job and great idea, but why aluminum for a name plate? I think brass would be a better choice. Just my 2ยข’s.

That’s one of the nicest military shadow boxes / displays I’ve seen, well done.

Thank you all. I told the guy ordering it I only have one rule, I never make the same gift twice and he laughed. I have a feeling the guy who ordered it may ask for a second one.
