Ok.. here is the rocker now that it’s got a coat of hand rubbed oil finish on it.. the first of 12 coats.. the pictures makes the rocker look alot wider than it really is for some reason.. but I guess that a phone camera for ya..I will be borrowing a better camera to take decent pictures.. this rocker is for sale to anyone who wants it.. the templates used, are the templates Sam gave me personally and the chair matches the ones he makes now..

Ok..I added 2 more pictures.. of the joinery of the arm to the front leg..and the back legs at the top

Well done on the gain orientation. A lot of though and hard work in that one. Looks a good chair to sit while coming up with your next project idea(s).

Beautiful ! I love Tiger Maple : )This is something that you just have to see in person because pictures won’t do it justice.

This rocker is gorgeous. You did a good job with the wood selection as well. I really enjoy the look that tiger maple gives to a piece. I have to agree that Sam would definately put his seal of approval on this.

Nice job.

Wow! If I weren’t a man of meager means I would be all over that chair. Each anniversary I buy my wife a miniature rocking chair (she wants to grow old together and rock on the porch) and one of these days I hope to be able to get her a REAL one. And this piece you have crafted would knock her socks off. You do very fine work… I’m impressed. And I agree with the others… I could stand to see more photos.

RB – I speak for everyone that hasn’t yet commented when I say “STUNNING chair & beautiful workmanship.”

Now, can anyone tell me where I can buy a set of Sam Maloof plans?
Not plans for a Maloof inspired chair, but the genuine article. I have a load of Zebrano that my wife wants transformed into a “Maloof” rocker.

thank you all..to be honest PG..I do not know of anywhere that a set of his plans can be “Purchased”..I got my templates by actually being friends with Sam and him taking a liking to me when he clearly saw that I couldn’t afford to buy one of his rockers..I have been asked many times for copies of it, but haven’t given them out due to the fact that I think sam would think I betrayed his trust.. he never did say I couldn’t.. but the boys who work for him said he never ever does that for anyone else..so I just kept them to myself and plugged away..

Keep those templates to yourself, no better way to honor the friendship you have with him. There are many many people in this world that will sell any thing for a buck but somethings just shouldn’t be shared. This is one. IMO.

Beautiful chair by the way.

Thanks mranum..I would freely give it to all those who ask if I knew I had Sam’s blessing..the very last thing I want to do is to make prolly the worlds most renown woodworker upset with me…lol

RB – I think you are correct to give out copies only IF Sam approves. If he has not clearly stated that you may give out a copy of his plans and templates, then don’t.

Even though I have an urge to grab you by the nose and shout “GIVE them to ME” I believe integrity and intellectual property are to be respected.

Next time you chat with Sam, please ask him if there is a place to buy his plans. I have looked, but have not found a way to buy Sam Maloof plans. I can buy plans of Maloof inspired chairs, but I’m still hoping to find the real deal.

Wow, that chair is a real beauty. I hope to be able to make a rocker one day. Not sure I can copy Maloofs, as I always have my own artistic vision. But I want to make one none the less. Thanks for sharing. Your work is stunning

that is one of the best i have seen and i have been looking alot lately, I hope to build one like that myself soon. I bet those templates are even more precious since sam’s passing. As for sharing I just recieved a book about sam maloof and from what i read he was the kind of man who wanted wood working shared with the world, (you are an example of that), however, he also encouraged people to find there own style. I agree with kolwdwrkr, we should put a little of ourselves in our work. again very nice job.

Thanks Duane.. Yes.. I was very fortuanate to have cultivated a friendship with Sam over the years.. As far as I know I’m the only one with templates of his rocker that he drew out for me himself..Finewoodworking magazine had Sam on the cover as a tribute to his life and it was sad to see him there knowing he is gone.. he really gave me wind under my sails when I was struggling with whatever I had going on in my life..

as for putting a little something of ourselves in the rocker or whatever we are making.. that’s very true, but on this particular rocker..I wanted to make it in the true Sam style..

Again.. thanks for looking.. and glad you liked it..Randy
