Wood Burning on Maple Burl Slab

I cut this slab a while back and have had it sitting around not knowing what to do with it. It’s a very unique looking piece, with the twisted grain of the burls and the slabs odd shape. It was the top cut off a burl maple log that I milled with my chainsaw mill. Using one of my Dad’s favorite poems, I sanded down the piece, pulled out the wood burner and got started. Using a weaving pattern, I carefully burned the poem onto the piece. The odd flowing shape of the slab fit the words to the poem perfectly, entitled “The Weaver”. I plan to give this to my dad for a Father’s day gift this year.

—-”The Weaver”

My life is but a weaving
between my Lord and me,
I cannot choose the colors
He worketh steadily.

Oft times He weaveth sorrow,
and I in foolish pride
forget he sees the upper
but I the under side.

Not till the loom is silent
and the shuttles cease to fly,
shall God unroll the canvas
and explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
in the Weaver’s skillful hand,
as threads of gold and silver
in the pattern He has planned.

Wonderful project, with an outstanding purpose, also love the poem. I will be surprised if your Fater does not shed at least one tear.

Beautiful piece of wood and excellent workmanship. Good idea thinking out of the box.

That is so creative and beautifully done. I’d love to see a close up picture of part of it. Nice work.
